man tissues and blood cells. In particular, @32adrenergic receptor effects on lymphocytes and gran ulocytes have been probed extensively.' Recently, Liggett2 identified and characterized @32-adrenergic receptors in human alveolar macrophages responding to specific stimulation with an increase of intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). This increase in cAMP has striking inhibitory effects on alveolar macrophage functions such as lysosomal content release,3 migration,4 phagocytosis,5 calcium dependent Na@/K@ pump,6 and oxygen-free radical production.7― Most of these studies were carried out on alveolar macrophages from animals. Few reports on human lung macrophage activities have been published and the results are often controversial. The defensive role of alveolar macrophages is of primary importance, but an excessive release of in flammatory mediators can cause damage to lung tissues. The understanding ofwhat may condition the

Plant transformation: A pilus in Agrobacterium T-DNA transfer

Agrobacterium tumefaciens transfers a protein-DNA complex to plant cells in a process similar to bacterial conjugation; the mechanism of transfer is beginning to be unravelled by biochemical, genetic and electron microscopic studies.

Bacterial Evolution: Chromosome Arithmetic and Geometry

Recent sequencing projects have characterized bacterial genomes that are organized onto elements of various sizes, shapes and numbers. Aside from its biological relevance and curiosity, this diversity calls into question the way that we define bacterial chromosomes.

Enhanced phenol biodegradation and aerobic granulation by two coaggregating bacterial strains.

The effect of coaggregation of the two bacterial strains Propioniferax-like PG-02 and Comamonassp. PG-08 on phenol degradation and aerobic granulation was investigated. While PG-02 was characterized as a phenol-degrader with a low half-saturation kinetics constant, PG-08 possessed strong aggregation ability with poor phenol degradation ability. The two strains coaggregated through involvement o...

Bacterial succession and metabolite changes during flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) retting with Bacillus cereus HDYM-02

High-throughput sequencing and GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) were jointly used to reveal the bacterial succession and metabolite changes during flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) retting. The inoculation of Bacillus cereus HDYM-02 decreased bacterial richness and diversity. This inoculum led to the replacement of Enterobacteriaceae by Bacillaceae. The level of aerobic Pseudomonadaceae...

Chromosome Segregation: Pushing Plasmids Apart

The ParM ATPase from Escherichia coli plasmid R1 assembles into F-actin-like filaments which appear to push replicated copies of the plasmid to opposite ends of the cell, ensuring partitioning into daughter cells. Might bacterial chromosomes use a similar mitotic strategy for segregation?
